DeepSeek R1 vs ChatGPT

 DeepSeek R1 vs ChatGPT 2025

The launch of DeepSeek R1, a Chinese rival to OpenAI's ChatGPT, has sparked significant excitement in the AI community and is shaking up the tech landscape in the US. This development signals the start of a new competition among AI chatbots as the Chinese startup DeepSeek introduces its latest innovation, DeepSeek R1.

DeepSeek R1 and ChatGPT are both AI systems built on Large Language Models (LLMs), designed to comprehend and produce human-like text. These models support a range of tasks such as writing, research, coding, and idea generation. This article will also provide insights into the pricing structures of these AI models. The Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has become the most popular free app in the country. You can download it for free from Apple’s App Store or the official website. However, some advanced features and local settings might need a powerful device or a paid subscription for full access.

What is DeepSeek?

DeepSeek, an AI company based in Hangzhou, China, launched in July 2023. It runs on the open-source DeepSeek-V3 model and is partly funded by Liang Wenfeng. According to the BBC, Liang used capital from his hedge fund to support the company and reportedly stockpiled Nvidia A100 chips before they were banned from export to China.

As of Monday, DeepSeek V3 is the most downloaded app on the Apple Store in the US. Let that sink in a Chinese-developed chatbot now tops the charts in the US. Even if its impact is still unfolding, this shake-up has sparked questions about whether US tech companies have made the most of the billions they've invested in AI development.

DeepSeek is becoming a major competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, offering a more open and affordable option. Users can download and run the model on their own devices, keeping their data private and secure. It also gives more control over content, helping to avoid censorship or bias. When it comes to technical tasks like coding, math, and logical reasoning, DeepSeek often performs better than ChatGPT.

DeepSeek Accuracy

A popular online developer community reported that DeepSeek V3 scored 92% on complex problem-solving tasks, outperforming GPT-4, which scored 78%.

Cost and Pricing

Last month, DeepSeek's creators revealed that training the V3 model cost under $6 million, mainly using Nvidia’s H800 chips, a mid-range option. While some critics argue that earlier development stages could push the total cost past $1 billion, it’s still impressive.

When you break down the costs, DeepSeek's pricing stands out. OpenAI's GPT-4 charges $15 per million input tokens, while DeepSeek’s R1 charges just $0.55 per million tokens.

This makes DeepSeek significantly more affordable—believed to be 20 to 50 times cheaper and more efficient than OpenAI’s GPT-4. DeepSeek also excels in logical reasoning tests, outperforming ChatGPT and Claude AI by 7-14%
